Automatically Adding (and Updating) Your Sports Team Schedule to Your Google Calendar

Do you carry a paper copy of your favorite sports team’s schedule in your pocket, or keep the team app open on your phone, so you can easily check for potential scheduling conflicts?

Wouldn’t it be better if your games were integrated into the Calendar app on your phone? And the calendar would update whenever those “TBAs” turned into real game times?

It’s simple to do.

You could try to do this directly on your phone, but the various procedures I tried didn’t work, for various reasons. Then, I came across a simple method to do so on my computer. (It uses the Google Calendar app, which is automatically shared to all your devices, just like you Gmail.)

Google Calendar has built-in calendars for each college football team (and many other sports) that you can subscribe to.

Before we get started, you’ll want to install the Google Calendar app on your phone or other mobile device, if you haven’t already.

To subscribe to the sports team calendars:

  1. Open Google Calendar (calendar.google.com, or just choose it from the various Google apps in, say, Gmail, right beside your avatar (face) in the upper right-hand corner.)
  2. Click the “+” beside “Other calendars” (on the left side of the screen)
  3. Click on “Browse Calendars of Interest”
  4. Scroll down to “Sports”
  5. Click “Football”
  6. Click “NCAA Football – NCAAF”
  7. Find the team(s) you want to follow and click on them.
  8. You’re done!
Refresh the Google Calendar app on your mobile phone or other device(s), and the schedule is fully loaded – and will be automatically updated as the team’s schedule is updated.

Want to set those events in your team colors? It’s simple.

  1. Make sure you’re on the main page of your Google Calendar (not still on the “Settings” page where you selected the team calendar, and that you’re still on your computer, not your mobile app)
  2. Hover your cursor over the calendar name and click the 3-dot “Options” icon next to it.
  3. Click on the closest color to your team color. It’s now automatically updated wherever your Google Calendar displays.

That’s it! Now your team schedules will always be up to date, right on your phone.
